SCALE is an exhibition of repeating infrastructure inspired patterns. The works make use of the industrial unit sized space at Altogether Otherwise with each piece measuring approximately 2 metres by 3 metres.

When viewed close up, each tile of a pattern represents a single scene of infrastructure and how it is taken in a fleeting glimpse; Tower cranes on a building site spotted through a gap in the city skyline, wind turbines appearing round the bend of a hill or AC units clustered around an office window. When the viewer steps back, the repeating tiles reveal these systems’ extent and reach as part of a much bigger network, seemingly absurd in its repetition but more representative of a global infrastructure.

The patterns are created by digitally arranging and layering hand-drawn elements. The pattern tiles are mass printed by risograph printing, trimmed to an A4 repeating tile and then connected together to create a larger pattern piece. As each tile repeats at every edge, the size of the pattern is only limited by the space it is displayed in.
